Discover Hyaloclastite Ridges at Langisjór

Take a journey into the heart of Iceland’s rugged wilderness, where you’ll explore the striking geological features of hyaloclastite ridges around the remote highland lake, Langisjór.  Nestled at the edge of the Vatnajökull Glacier, this highland lake offers an awe-inspiring backdrop to our land which was shaped by fire and ice.

Mapping of Hyaloclastite Ridges Expedition Itinerary:

Your adventure begins with early morning pick up from the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.  Next, you'll embark on a fabulous scenic drive deep into the volcanic highlands... To illustrate, you'll pass through untouched landscapes, moss-covered lava fields, and other unforgettable features.  Arriving at Lake Langisjór, will leave you in aw.  As it's truly a hidden gem surrounded by jagged peaks and ridges formed by ancient subglacial volcanic eruptions.  Some might say, you’ll step into a natural amphitheater of unparalleled beauty.  Very few find themselves here, count yourself lucky!

Accompanied by an educated guide, you’ll map via drone and hike along hyaloclastite ridges.  These unique rock formations were created when volcanic lava interacts explosively with ice and water.  Furthermore, these ridges are characterized by their dark, porous textures and surreal shapes.  As you trek through this otherworldly terrain, your guide will provide insights into the powerful volcanic forces that shaped the landscape and the ongoing dynamic processes at play.

Along the way, you'll take in breathtaking panoramic views of Langisjór’s serene blue waters contrasting against the stark, rugged surroundings.  On a clear day, you may even catch glimpses of the Vatnajökull Glacier shimmering in the distance.
