Katla Glacier Outlet Mapping Journey Itinerary:

  • Morning Departure: Begin your journey with a scenic drive from your pick-up location through the stunning South Iceland countryside.  As you approach Katla Geopark, the looming presence of the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap and the infamous Katla Subgacial-Volcano will set the stage for the day's adventure.

 

  • Arrival at Katla Glacier: Upon reaching the edge of the glacier, you'll receive a comprehensive safety briefing and an introduction to glacier mapping techniques. Equipped with specialized gear, including crampons and ice axes (as required), you'll be ready to step near and onto the ice.

 

  • Guided Glacier Trek: Trek across the bottom surface of the Katla Glacier, guided by a seasoned expert who will lead you through glacial ridges.  Learn about the glacier's history, its current state, and the impact of climate change on this fragile environment.

 

  • Hands-On Glacier Mapping: Engage in the scientific process as you assist with glacier mapping activities. Use advanced GPS equipment to measure the glacier's movement, and other vital data. Your contributions will aid ongoing research and help monitor the health of this vital ecosystem.

 

  • Lunch Break with a View: Enjoy a packed lunch with a glacier view!  Truly surrounded by panoramic views of the surrounding picturesque mountains and the vast expanse of ice near your feet.

 

  • Geological Insights: Throughout the expedition, your guide will provide insights into the geological significance of Katla Geopark, explaining how the areas are all interconnected.

 

  • Descent and Return: After completing the glacier mapping, make your way back down to the base of the glacier. Reflect on the day's experiences during the return journey, where you'll have the chance to ask further questions and discuss the significance of your findings.

 

  • Scenic Drive Back: Conclude your day with a thrilling 4x4 drive back to your drop-off location, passing through the picturesque landscapes of South Iceland.  Take home unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of the dynamic forces shaping our planet.
