Katla Ice Cave & Dead Ice Mapping Expedition

Step into the role of a Civilian Scientist on this extraordinary expedition within Katla Geopark, where you'll contribute to real-world glaciology research in one of Iceland's most awe-inspiring and dynamic environments. This unique 2-day tour invites you to explore a mysterious ice cave on Katla Glacier and participate in dead ice mapping.  An essential task in understanding the impacts of climate change.  Perfect for adventurous spirits and curious minds!  This hands-on experience will connect you deeply with Iceland’s powerful natural forces.

Overview:

  • Be a Civilian Scientist: Engage in meaningful scientific research as you measure and document the ever-changing ice caves and dead ice zones of the Katla Glacier.  Your findings will contribute to ongoing studies of glacial dynamics and climate impact.

  • Guided Ice Cave Exploration: Gear up and take a journey to the heart of Katla Glacier outlet.  Here, you'll navigate to a natural ice cave with a local guide.  Not only will you learn how these natural formations are created but what they also reveal about the glacier's movement and health.  Measurements will be taken before leaving so we can track the recession levels.

  • Dead Ice Mapping: Participate in the fascinating process of dead ice mapping— analyzing areas where the glacier is retreating and leaving behind isolated blocks of ice. This crucial work helps scientists understand the glacier's response to environmental changes.  Additionally, this process allows for a better understanding of how volcanic sand can insolate, protect, or expedite the evolution stages of the ice.

  • Hands-On Training: Receive training on how to measure cave dimensions and map dead ice areas using specialized equipment (GPS, Drone, Ground Cameras).  No prior experience is needed; our team will ensure you’re fully equipped and prepared.

  • Scenic Glacier Views: While cultivating the data, you'll be immersed in the raw beauty of the Katla Glacier and the surrounding Mýrdalsjökull ice cap.  Delight in panoramic views that stretch across the rugged Icelandic landscape.

  • Contribution to Climate Research: Your participation in this tour not only offers an unforgettable adventure but also supports critical scientific research aimed at understanding and mitigating the effects of climate change on Iceland's glaciers.  This glacier historically has been very rarely tracked until now!
