Become a key player in the ongoing Scientific efforts to study one of Iceland's most evolving glacier outlets.  As a Citizen Scientist data collector, you will step into the boots of a researcher.  Truly, contributing to crucial data collection that helps monitor and understand the shifting landscapes of Krossárjökull.  This hands-on adventure combines the thrill of glacier trekking with the satisfaction of making a real impact on the environmental research and Icelandic history!

Krossárjökull Glacier Outlet Mapping Expedition Itinerary:

  • Morning Departure: You'll be picked up from your South Iceland accommodation to embark on a super unique day.  Next, you'll take an inspiring ride through Thórsmörk to reach the canyon where Krossárjökull is accessed.

 

  • Hiking to Krossárjökull Glacier Outlet: Jump out of your 4x4 and be greeted with the most serene views and no tourists!  Before you start your 1-1.5 hour hike one way to the glaciers domain.

 

  • Guided Glacier Area Trek: Arriving to the glaciers edge, you'll witness a dead ice, ice cave and be enthralled by this unknown area.

 

  • Be a Citizen Scientist: Next, you'll start mapping the glacier base and your data will contribute to ongoing research studies.  Also, you'll take conductivity measures of the water in the glacier river.

 

  • Lunch Break with a View: Delight in a packed lunch in an area even locals don't venture to!  Bask in the epicness and solitude.

 

  • Geological Insights: Throughout the expedition, your guide will provide insights into the geological significance of the glaciers within Katla Geopark, explaining how the areas are all interconnected.

 

  • Descent and Return: After completing the glacier mapping experience, make your way through the canyon to hike back to the 4x4.  Reflect on the impactful experiences and data you created during the return hike, 

 

  • Scenic Drive Back: Conclude your day with a beautiful 4x4 drive back to your drop-off location, passing through the picturesque landscapes of Thórsmörk.  You'll take home irreplaceable moments and a deeper understanding of our dynamic glaciers in Iceland.

Krossárjökull Glacier Mapping Expedition Specifics:

Expedition Duration: Approximately 8-12 hours (including travel time)

Difficulty Level: Moderate with Foot River Crossings (suitable for physically fit participants with a sense of adventure)

Departure: From Hvolsvöllur

Availability: May - October (depending on conditions could have flexibility)

Group Size: Limited to 2-6 people (2 person minimum)

Special Notes: Due to the Scientific nature of this tour, group sizes are limited to ensure each participant receives personalized guidance and training.  Katla Geopark reserves the right to make changes to the plan based on weather and safety dynamics (IE, Switching days, to dead ice mapping or different glacier edge mapping, etc).
