Sandfellsjökull Glacier Outlet Mapping Expedition

We invite you to go beyond the ordinary and immerse yourself in the vital work of glacier mapping.  Sandfellsjökull is not a glacier outlet many spend time on.  In fact, it's quite hidden in the highlands of Iceland.  But you'll get the rare opportunity to find your way there with an experienced local and provide others with a dynamic insight into this illusive area!

Sandfellsjökull Glacier Outlet Mapping Expedition Itinerary:

  • Morning Departure: You'll take an inspiring 4x4 ride up to Sandfellsjökull Glacier Outlet through the Icelandic Highlands.

  • Arrival at Sandfellsjökull Glacier: After hiking ~1 hour to the glacier outlet, you'll have a safety brief and gear up!

  • Guided Glacier Trek: While walking along the glacier edge with a mapping gear, you'll learn more about this offbeat glacier outlet.

  • Be a Citizen Scientist: Your mapping journey of this glacier outlet will provide invaluable data now and for the future!

  • Lunch Break with a View: Enjoy a packed lunch on the glacier, surrounded by the beauty of the icy wilderness. Take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the vast expanse of ice beneath your feet.

  • Geological Insights: Throughout the expedition, your guide will provide insights into the geological significance of Katla Geopark, explaining how the area's volcanic activity, geothermal features, and glacial dynamics are interconnected.  Understand more about the recent glacier outburst floods that have come down from this outlet too!

  • Descent and Return: After completing the glacier mapping (via GPS, Drone, Ground Photos), make your way back down to the 4x4. Reflect on the day's experiences during the return journey, where you'll have the chance to ask further questions and discuss the significance of your findings.
