Tindfjallajökull Iceland Glacier Mapping Expedition

Tracking the Last Days of Tindfjallajökull Mapping Expedition Itinerary:

  • Morning Departure: Your remarkable adventure will begin with a picturesque 4x4 drive from your accommodation through the stunning South Iceland countryside.  Then you'll turn onto the highland track which heads up towards Tindfjallajökull, our disappearing glacier.

 

  • Arrival at Tindfjallajökull Glacier: After hiking 30-60 minutes one way, you'll receive a comprehensive safety briefing and an introduction to glacier mapping techniques.  Equipped with specialized gear, including crampons (as needed), you'll be ready to step near and onto the ice.

 

  • Guided Hike: Trek across the bottom surface of the Tindfjallajökull Glacier, guided by a seasoned expert who will lead you through the dynamic area.  Learn about the glacier's history, its current state and the impact of climate change on this fragile environment.

 

  • Be a Citizen Scientist:  Experience the scientific process of data cultivating as you assist with glacier mapping activities. Use advanced GPS equipment to measure the glacier's movement and other vital data.  The data you will craft is critically needed to trace the last days of this disappearing glacier. 

 

  • Lunch Break with a View: Enjoy a packed lunch with a panoramic view! 

 

  • Geological Insights: Throughout the expedition, your driver guide will provide insights into the geological significance of Katla Geopark, explaining how the areas are all interconnected.

 

  • Descent and Return: After completing the expedition of Tindfjallajökull Glacier mapping, make your way back down to the 4x4. 

 

  • Scenic Drive Back: Reflect on the day's experiences during the return journey, where you'll have the chance to ask further questions and discuss the significance of your findings.  Take home unforgettable memories and a deeper understanding of the dynamic forces shaping our tiny island in the North Atlantic and planet!

Tindfjallajökull Glacier Mapping Expedition Specifics:

Expedition Duration: Approximately 6-8 hours (including travel time)

Difficulty Level: Moderate (suitable for physically fit participants with a sense of adventure)

Departure: From Hvolsvöllur

Availability: November, March, April, and Mid-May.  Other times of year possibly available by in advance request and dependent on conditions.

Group Size: Limited to 2-6 people (2 person minimum)

Special Notes: Due to the Scientific nature of this tour, group sizes are limited to ensure each participant receives personalized guidance and training.  Katla Geopark reserves the right to make changes to the plan based on weather and safety dynamics (IE, Switching days, to dead ice mapping or different glacier edge mapping, etc).
