Emstrur is highland pasture land used for sheep grazing in summer
Emstrur and Fjallabak
Emstrur is highland pasture land used for sheep grazing in summer. It lies north-west of Mýrdalsjökul, an area well known for the famous hiking route from Landmannalaugar, the ‘Laugavegur Trail’ which goes to Thórsmörk. You can drive to Emstrur and then hike down into Thórsmörk, a 15-16 km hike that takes about 5-6 hours. The few mountains in the area are most notably Hattfell and Stóru Súlur. At Emstrur there is a little shepherd´s hut owned by the Icelandic Touring Association. Near the hut is the beautiful Markarfljótsgljúfur Canyon which is a natural gem and not to be missed.
